Iran has exported 30 tons of shrimps to Russia for the first time in the wake of Russian sanctions on agricultural imports from Europe.
Seyyed Hassan Salehi, the head of Irans Fisheries Organization, said Monday that Tehran is also prepared to export 5,000 tons of shrimps and 20,000 tons of trout by March if Iranian and Russian traders can reach an agreement on the prices.

ISNA news agency quoted Salehi as saying that Tehran and Moscow had already coordinated the issue of the compliance of Iranian fishery products with Russian quality requirements.

He added that the Russian market seemed attractive to Iranian seafood suppliers.

Russia has imposed sanctions on Western food imports in retaliation for European bans on Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine. The West accuses Russia of fueling tensions in eastern Ukraine, while Moscow rejects the accusation.

The Russian bans on food imports from the West have opened up new opportunities for Iranian exporters, with the Islamic Republic saying that it is open to supplying some of the banned agricultural products.

In September 2014, Iran and Russia also agreed to use their national currencies in bilateral trade.
