Chinese, Russian private sector to invest in Rasht-Astara railway

Rasht, Gilan Prov., Jan 4, IRNA Governor General of Gilan Province, Mohammad-Ali Najafi, said on Sunday that Chinese and Russian businessmen are ready to invest in the project for construction of Rasht-Astara railroad and the bid is on agenda.
Najafi made the remarks while inspecting national Rasht-Ghazvin railway project in Roudbar.
He said the investment will be in the form of finance and the expert groups from Ministry of Roads and Development and the Management and Planning Organization are busy taking the bid into consideration.

The project is expected to cost about 14,000 billion rials, he added.

The Gilan Governor General said the project for Rasht-Astara railway construction has already been approved in a meeting between President Hassan Rouhani and the Russian and Azeri counterparts.

He said President Rouhani's support should be taken as a great impetus given to swift commissioning of the project.

The Governor General said the project is expected to be operational by next 18 months.

Meanwhile, he said that Ghazvin-Rasht railway, 164km long, has thus far shown more than 85 percent construction progress.

The railway connects Iran to the Commonwealth of Independent States and Russia on the north and the Persian Gulf states on the south.
