US diplomat: Iran, US sharing mutual interests
New York, Jan 3, IRNA Veteran US diplomat John Limbert said on Saturday that Iran and the US share mutual interests in the region and the whole world.
Limbert, a former US ambassador to Mauritania, made the remarks speaking in an exclusive interview with IRNA.
Limbert said that talks on solving the nuclear dispute has opened a new gate for further dialogue and settlement of historical problems of Iran and the United States.

On remarks made by US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham in a recent visit with Israeli Benjamin Netanyahu warning about imposition of new sanctions on Iran, Limbert said that such remarks are not very astonishing of Graham and that he had uttered words of this kind before.

This is illogical of a US congressman to say openly that US Congress follows the Israeli lead, Limbert said.

He said that such claims even enrages many US Congresspersons.

Limbert asserted that such conflict between US government and the Congress are natural. However, he noted that ultimately it is the US president that determines foreign policy issues.

Citing the normalizing of relations between the US and Cuba after more than 50 years of icy relations, Limbert said that despite oppositions in the Congress, the US president enforced his decision.

On Iran's nuclear issue and the obstacles created by Israeli Netanyahu in this regard, the veteran diplomat said that there is hostility between Netanyahu and Obama and that Netanyahu is trying to make use of Iran's nuclear issue to undermine the US president.

He believed that even if Iran's nuclear talks don't bear fruit in short time, there is no way for their failure and they will continue.

Limbert said that mutual concerns such as fear of re-emerge of Taliban in Afghanistan, dominance of Daesh terrorist group in the region or rise of a new dictator like Saddam Hussein in Iraq continues to keep Iran and the US linked together.
