US policy of sanctions has failed: Analyst

The US policy of imposingsanctions against other countries has failed and has made America more isolated in the world, an analyst tells Press TV.
Jan Oberg, the founder of transnational.org, said that pressuring countries just because of their differences is a disastrous US policy that has proven to be counterproductive, as it makes Washington more isolated in the world.

Referring to Irans nuclear negotiations with the P5+1, he said, Last years November agreement (Joint Plan of Action) was a huge step by Iran and a very small step by the US. I wrote at that time and said that, the next time, if there is going to be a deal, it must be the US that takes the big step and shows its goodwill.

Oberg also pointed to the US threats of military action against Iran and said that one cannot issue threats of invasion and bombing and simultaneously claim they want a deal, too.
This arrogant policy is not going to go anywhere and is self-defeating for the US, he said.
On Tuesday, the US Treasury imposed new economic bans on nine individuals and entities, most of them for violating anti-Iran sanctions. The Treasury Department said in a statement that most of the newly targeted entities helped Iran obtain US banknotes worth hundreds of millions of dollars in violation of Washingtons sanctions against Tehran.

The sanctions come as Iran and the P5+1 the US, the UK, France, Russia and China plus Germany are in talks to reach a final agreement aimed at resolving the standoff over the Islamic Republics civilian nuclear work.

Under the Geneva agreement sealed between the two sides last November, the six countries agreed to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Tehran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on Iran as long as the deal was in effect.
