Quake strikes southwestern Iran

Bushehr, Jan 1, IRNA - A relatively strong earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale hit the town of Bushkan in this southwestern province on Thursday.
According to the Seismological Center of the Tehran University Geophysics Institute, the tremor occurred at 12:19 hours local time (0849 GMT).
It was registered in an area located at 26.68 degrees longitude and 51.78 degrees latitude. The epicenter of the tremor was registered 10 km deep in the ground.

No report has been available yet on possible damage or casualties caused by the earthquake.

Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.

The worst in recent times hit Bam in Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of its population - and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel.
