Turkey has apprehended a 16-year-old high school student for offending the countrys President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by accusing him of corruption.
According to Hurriyet daily, the student, believed to be a member of a leftist organization, was delivering a speech in the city of Konya on Wednesday when he was arrested.

He may face up to four years in prison if convicted of the charges.

Erdogan, who was elected president in August, has accused US-based Turkish opposition figure Fethullah Glen of plotting to overthrow him. Gulen heads the influential spiritual and social movement of Hizmet. Erdogan has also vowed to crush the evil forces associated with the movement and its leader.

Last week, Turkish police detained more than 20 journalists and media staff in raids on opposition media outlets deemed close to Glen.

The European Union (EU)s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn have condemned Turkeys raid on journalists and media people as being against the European values and standards Turkey aspires to be part of.
