Grand Ayatollah hails Iran, Egypt closeness

Qom, Dec 15, IRNA Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi on Monday said good chance currently exists for approchement of Iran and Egypt.
The Ayatollah who is a spiritual guide for many Shiite Muslims, made the remarks in a meeting with Ahmad Moballeghi who represented Iran at the Cairo conference on extremism.
Egypts al-Azhar University held the International Conference on Fighting Extremism in Cairo in early December with the participation of a number of countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia and Morocco that condemned barbaric crimes committed by the terrorist group of Daesh (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria.

Referring to the conference as a proper chance for Tehran-Cairo cooperation, the cleric said there are certain parties opposing Tehran-Cairo close ties as they consider it against their own interests.

Welcoming approchement of the two major Muslim states, the Grand Ayatollah said both sides should attach grave importance to the crucial issue.

Iran severed ties with Egypt after Cairo signed the 1978 Camp David Accord with the Israeli regime and offered asylum to Iran's deposed dictator, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
