Plan to protect women against violence

Tehran, Nov 27, IRNA - A plan for the establishment of a center for protecting women against violence has been presented by the Presidential Offices Department for Women and Family Affairs to the cabinet, said the head of the department.
Shahindokht Molaverdi added that the secretariat of the center will be established in the Justice Ministry and organizations mandated to cooperate with the department are expected to announce their views in the near future.
This will help various organizations involved in activities related to women to achieve integration and share responsibilities, she said.

Molaverdi also said documents ratified by international organizations are not sufficient to reduce violence against women.

Referring to Nov. 25 the UN-designated International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, she noted that violence against women has not been recognized widely in the past two decades.

She said a rise in the phenomenon has made it one of the most prominent forms of human rights violations.

The Declaration for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was ratified by the UN in 1993.

Molaverdi said a number of studies and researches have been conducted on the issue in Iran.

A committee was established in the Center for Womens Participation to curb violence against women some 15 years ago, she said.

The official also said the committee devised a national project to study various forms of violence against women in 28 provinces of the country, which was not pursued by the previous government.

Molaverdi noted that a bill on providing security to women, which was submitted to the cabinet by the previous government, is expected to be studied by the current government.

Based on our religious beliefs, efficient laws and regulations should be enacted to prevent such acts in society, but a long way is ahead to achieve the objective, she said.

Molaverdi said the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has emphasized the ratification of laws on eliminating violence, especially domestic violence against women.
