Araqchi: Iran after achieving agreement in coming weeks

Tehran, Nov 25, IRNA – A top member of Iranian nuclear negotiation team, Abbas Araqchi said here Monday sanctions and enrichment are key issues in talks, announcing that Iran is after achieving the comprehensive agreement in upcoming weeks.
“During the past six months we have had intensive negotiations and in that period good progress was achieved, reaching more shared viewpoints compared with the past,” said Araqchi in an interview with IRIB Channel 2’s Special Dialogue program.

He said that the new seven month extension was due to the end of the validity of the Geneva Agreement and the deadline of the 2nd six month negotiations on November 24.

“This 7 month extension does not mean that we need that much time, as all sides are agreed that a few weeks will suffice, immediately after that agreement on details, too, will be finalized in a short while,” he said.

He said that the seven month period was agreed on due to the existence of the imposed sanctions which should have been lifted in accordance with the agreed time schedule up to today, but are actually still in effect.

Araqchi said that the new Vienna agreement is actually the continuation of the Geneva Joint Plan of Action (JPA), based on which both sides will continue acting accordingly.

“Suspending the sanctions, too, will continue, based on which the exports, banking transactions, and release of US $700 million each month, just like the past 10 months will continue, and those amounts will be deposited in the Islamic Republic of Iran’s accounts,” he added.

He said that the negotiations within the next seven months will be on details.

“During the past 10 months we made good use of the time and resolved a bulk part of the difficulties, which is why the future perspective is better and untying the remaining knots seems to be easier,” added the deputy foreign minister.
