Several people have been killed in a car bomb attack in the capital of Iraqs semi-autonomous Kurdish region, Erbil.
According to the provincial spokesman, Hamza Hamed, the deadly incident took place at a checkpoint near the provincial government headquarters just before noon local time (0900 GMT) on Wednesday.

A witness at the scene of the deadly attack said that two police and two civilians were killed in the incident.

Nawzad Hadi, the governor of Erbil, also confirmed the incident in an interview with Kurdish state-run Rudaw TV channel. He, however, said it was not clear how many people had been killed or injured in the deadly attack.

Several vehicles were also damaged in the bomb attack.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombings so far. However, Iraqi officials blame the recent spike in such terrorist attacks on the Takfiri ISIL militants.

The ISIL launched an offensive in June and took control of Iraqs second largest city, Mosul, before sweeping through much of the countrys Sunni Arab heartland.

The extremist group has threatened all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians during its advances in the violence-torn Arab state.

New figures released by the United Nations show that violence in Iraq claimed at least 1,273 lives in October alone.

The UN casualty figures are lower than the death toll reported by the Iraqi government. Baghdad says more than 1,700 civilians and security forces were killed in October and over 2,300 others wounded.
