Mahallat fair exhibits 600 chrysanthemum species

Khomein, Markazi Prov. Nov 16, IRNA - Research scientists at the National Institute of Ornamental Plants in Mahallat, Markazi province, have registered and commercialized 600 species of chrysanthemum and presented them in the 13th Chrysanthemum Flower Exhibition held recently.
Pejman Azadi, the head of the institute, said Iran had only produced 10 species of chrysanthemum in 1997, wrote Sunday's edition of 'Iran Daily'.
This institute aims to manage high quality applied researches, collaborate with universities, research centers and private companies inside and outside the country, and establish research greenhouses and breeding centers to promote the flower industry.

Chrysanthemums, sometimes called mums or chrysanths, are flowering plants of the genus chrysanthemum in the family Asteraceae, which is one of the largest families of flowering plants with over 1,000 genera and about 20,000 species.

They are native to Asia and northeastern Europe. Most species originate from East Asia.
