New economic poles to be set up on south coasts

Tehran, Nov 14, IRNA Secretary of Free and Special Zones Coordination Council Akbar Torkan says the president has stressed on economic capacity building on south coasts. We are after establishing new economic poles on south coasts.

Visiting IRNA stand at the 20th Press and News Agencies Exhibition on Thursday, Torkan said recently a bill has been presented to the Majlis on the formation of Jask Free Zone.

He emphasized that one of the policies of the government of prudence and hope is development of south coastal areas. He noted that while throughout the world 70% of the population lives on coastal it is the vice versa in Iran.

He said out of the 20 cities of the country with a population of over 500 thousand none is situated on coastal areas.

Torkan said the government plans to have five cities with a population of over 500 thousand one of which is in Abadan, another in Khorramshahr and the other in Arvanad Free Zone, adding that Bushehr, Bandar Abbas and Chabahar are among other areas.

Stressing that Chabahar is currently moving towards economic development he said such an important task is taking shape with the construction of facilities like auto making, petrochemicals, steel and refinery.

Torkan further remarked that efforts are being made to build economic capacity in Chabahar, Jask and in future in Bushehr and thus move towards formation of cities with a population above 500 thousand on south coastal areas.

Deploring the fact that in some areas of the country the outlook is politically motivated and security oriented instead of being economic, Torkan said for economic development the axis should be based on economic outlook and special attention should be paid to economic capacities in order to build the required capacity.
