IAEA refuses to comment on Russia-Iran deal on nuclear cooperation

The International Atomic Energy Agency spokesperson Gill Tudor refused to comment on a deal Russia has reached with Iran on the construction of energy units at the Bushehr nuclear power plant.


MOSCOW, November 12 (RIA Novosti) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has refused tocomment ona deal Russia has reached withIranonthe construction ofenergy units atthe Bushehr nuclear power plant and the supply ofRussian fuel forthem.

"The IAEA does not express views oncommercial arrangements, nor onrelations betweenindividual Member States," IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor told RIA Novosti Tuesday, when asked fora comment onthe announcement ofthe Russia-Iran nuclear reactors deal.

Earlier onTuesday, Russia and Iran signed a number ofdocuments oncooperation forthe construction ofeight energy units, including four units atthe Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, using Russian technology. Nuclear fuel forthe units will be provided byRussia, withspent fuel rods being returned toRussia.

Russia's Rosatom nuclear agency has said that the construction ofnew energy blocks, including the delivery ofequipment and fuel, will be underthe guarantees ofthe IAEA and incompliance withthe Treaty onthe Non-Proliferation ofNuclear Weapons (NPT).
