Iran stops processing uranium using advanced enrichment centrifuge

US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki announced that Iran stopped using the advanced IR-5 centrifuge for uranium processing, a controversial enrichment method reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency, which had raised US claims against it.


WASHINGTON, November 11 (Sputnik) Iran has stopped processing uranium, using the advanced IR-5 centrifuge, a controversial enrichment method reported bythe International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),USState Department spokesperson Jen Psaki has said.

"We raised that [IR-5] issue withIran assoon asthe IAEA reported it, and it was resolved immediately. The Iranians have confirmed that they will not continue that activity ascited inthe IAEA report, so it's been resolved,"Psakitold journalists Monday.

Psaki said the United States "felt that it [Iran using the IR-5 centrifuge] was a violation ofwhat the IAEA requirements were", butstressed that her statements do not imply that the practice was inviolation ofthe November 2013 Iran nuclear deal.

The IAEA issued a report, saying that Iran was feeding natural uranium gas intothe new-model IR-5 centrifuge onFriday, ahead ofa new roundof P5+1 talks withTehran onthe Iranian nuclear program scheduled totake place inMuscat, Oman, onTuesday.

The United States and a broad coalition ofgovernments have imposedsanctionsonIran overits controversial nuclear program, which Iran claims is ofpurely peaceful nature. Last January the United States agreed toprovide limited sanctions relief if Iran froze its nuclear program. Since then, Iran has halted production and opened the door tointernational inspectors.

In November 2013, duringtalksheld inGeneva, the P5+1 group agreed toreach a deal withthe Tehran delegation, guaranteeing the peaceful nature ofthe Iranian nuclear program byJuly 2014. The deadline was later extended toNovember 24, 2014.
