Iraqi PM describes Iran as reliable neighbor

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in a meeting with Chairman of Iran's Expediency Council (EC) Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani underlined that Baghdad views Tehran as a reliable neighbor.

He called for promoting Iran-Iraq ties in the economic, cultural and political fields, saying that bilateral relations are rooted in common culture and history.

Rafsanjani, for his part, said that cooperation among Muslim states is politically and rationally indispensible under the current situation in the region and the world.

He said that the Iraqi full security and national sovereignty are Iran's best wishes.

"We have on several occasions after collapse of Saddam Hussein underlined that the two nations and governments' continued cooperation will leave numerous impacts on the region," Rafsanjani said.

He that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready for cooperation at all level the neighboring states need.

Iran and Iraq have enjoyed growing ties ever since the overthrow of the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, during the 2003 US invasion of the Muslim country.

Also on Tuesday, Iran and Iraq, once again, emphasized their determination to widen and deepen security cooperation in fight against terrorist and extremist groups, particularly against the ISIL.

In a meeting between Secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani and al-Abadi, the Iranian official said that restless campaign against Takfiri terrorists and their supporters stands atop Iran-Iraq cooperation agenda.

Continuous close cooperation between the two countries aimed at boosting both countries strategic capabilities and the two nations interests are vital, he added.

Al-Abadi, for his part, said that the Iraqi government and nation would never forget Irans effective cooperation and contributions in campaign against terrorism in Iraq.

My country is today engaged in a full scale, comprehensive war against terrorism and is determined to uproot the sedition of terrorism in Iraq relying on the brave Iraqi combatants, the premier said.
