MP: Riyadh allegations on Iran's interference in Syria, Iraq “baseless”

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian lawmaker rejected the claims made by Saudi Arabian foreign minister on Tehran’s interference in regional countries as “baseless and irrational”.

“The Islamic Republic never pays heed to such absurd and baseless remarks and will defend the oppressed people around the world...,” Mohammad Hassan Asafari, a member of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission told the Tasnim News Agency.

He was reacting to comments by Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faisal who described Iran as "part of the problem" in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

“The Saudi Arabian government had better be accountable for its nationals joining terrorist groups, including the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL),” the Iranian parliamentarian said.

He also deplored the state of democracy in Saudi Arabia and advised the country’s authorities to deal with their internal problems instead of interfering in other countries’ affairs.

Asafari said that the kingdom should allow the Saudi people to freely vote and elect their candidates in the government and parliament and have a say in decisions directly.

Today, people around the world are fully aware of Al Saud’s crimes in Bahrain and Iraq and its support for terrorist groups, he said, adding that the people can realize which country defends the oppressed and which country equips terrorists.
