Tehran, Oct 11, IRNA - The Third International Festival and General Assembly of Inter-City Intangible Cultural Cooperation Network (ICCN) opened in Isfahan on Thursday.
A large number of foreign and domestic officials attended the international festival that will run until October 12, according to Saturday's edition of 'Iran Daily'.
Concurrent with the festival, the First Women Forum of ICCN member-states was held to highlight women痴 role in promoting culture, particularly those related to intangible cultural activities.

Speaking in the joint ceremonies, Vice President for Women and Family Affairs Shahindokht Molaverdi praised the people of Isfahan and officials for hosting the international events.

Molaverdi hailed ICCN for focusing on the pivotal role of women in transferring the intangible heritage to future generations.

She said the upbeat outlook will give a further boost to women痴 role in preserving cultural values.

展omen have spared no efforts to help inscribe the country痴 intangible heritage on the UNESCO list, he said.

Molaverdi stressed that cultural activities can promote peace and Iran can be a frontrunner in this regard.

Heekyung Choi, the South Korean Secretary-General of ICCN, heaped praise on Iranians for hosting the festival, noting that the expansion of intangible cultural works has hindered attempts to spread Iranophobia in the world.

鄭lthough I used to be afraid of traveling to Iran, but I am now honored to be in the historical capital of Iran, Isfahan, she said.

Heekyung congratulated Iranian women for their influential role in changing the Islamic Republic痴 bad image.

She then referred to well-known Iranian women who brought glory to the Persian Gulf country.

溺aryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to ever win the Fields Medal known as the 哲obel Prize of mathematics indicates the strong clout of women in the Iranian society and the world, she said.

The Fields Medal was presented to Mirzakhani by the International Mathematical Union on August 13 at the International Congress of Mathematicians, held in Seoul, South Korea.

Heekyung said despite challenges facing women, the success of individuals such as Mirzakhani can be inspiring.

Morteza Saqaeian-Nejad, Isfahan痴 mayor, and Rasoul Zargarpour, the province痴 governor general, addressed the inaugural ceremony of ICCN and commented on the potentials of Iran, especially the historical city of Isfahan in boosting cultural ties with the world.

ICCN has 40 governments as full members and 25 cultural institutes, local NGOs and specialized organizations for safeguarding intangible heritages.

It was established as a platform for the worldwide collaboration of mayors and local authorities for safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage as a vital component of sustainable development.

The initiative for establishing ICCN was launched at the First International Round Table of Mayors in Gangneung City, South Korea, in 2004.

Subsequently, participants of the 2008 Round Table of Mayors unanimously agreed to establish ICCN in Egypt.

Intangible cultural heritage aims to protect various cultures and practices that, unlike items on the UNESCO World Heritage List, cannot be touched. Intangible cultural heritage includes song, music, drama, skills and other parts of culture that can be recorded but cannot be touched and interacted with, without a vehicle for the culture. These cultural vehicles are called 塗uman treasures by the United Nations.
