Iran ready to purchase 10m tons of wheat from Russia: ambassador

Moscow, Sept 9, IRNA Irans Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei announced Tehrans readiness to purchase 10 million tons of wheat from Russia.
Addressing the Monday session of the second Iran-Russia Cooperation Committee in Pyatigorsk, Russia, Sanaei said Iran could increase its fruit and vegetable exports to Russia and purchase 10 million tons of wheat from Russia in return.
He said boycotting fruit and vegetable imports from the U.S., Canada and some European countries by Russia provides a unique opportunity for expansion of Tehran-Moscow cooperation.

Iran is currently exporting fruits and vegetables to Russia but the share of its products in the Russian market is meager while Russia is situated close to Iran and the distance between some Russian cities with Tehran is less than 1600 km.

The Iranian ambassador said today this distance is not long and cannot be considered an obstacle for strengthening import-export activities between Iran and Russia.

He said before there were certain banking problems on the way of economic interactions between Iran and Russia but these problems have been removed.

Underlining Irans interest in importing agricultural products, especially grains, from Russia, Sanaei said currently Iran imports up to 10 million tons of grains and corn from Latin America while Russia is capable of meeting this need.

As for the current trade situation between Iran and Russia, the Iranian diplomat said: In the light of the latest government agreements, facilities for trade-economic cooperation between the two countries have made a tangible progress.

He noted that the memorandum of understanding for economic cooperation between Iran and Russia signed last month has provided new sources for the growth of cooperation and development of bilateral ties.

This is the biggest document for cooperation between Iran and Russia all through the history of our ties.

The first session for regional cooperation between Iran and Russia was held in Tabriz, northwest Iran, on July 17 with an approach of developing provincial cooperation.

In reaction to Western anti-Russia sanctions, Russia has boycotted import of agricultural and meat products from the U.S. and its Western allies.

Senior Russian officials have announced readiness to replace friendly countries such as Iran for import of agricultural products.
