International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano has arrived in Tehran to hold talks with Iranian officials.Amano arrived in the Iranian capital late on Saturday and is scheduled to hold talks with authorities about Irans nuclear program.
The IEAE director general is set to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Director Ali Akbar Salehi.
Iran and the IAEA signed a joint statement in November 2013 to outline a roadmap on mutual cooperation on certain outstanding nuclear issues. Under the deal, Iran agreed, on a voluntary basis, to allow IAEA inspectors to visit the Arak heavy water plant in central Iran and the Gachin uranium mine, south of the country.
On July 20, the IAEAs monthly report verified Irans compliance with the terms of its interim nuclear deal with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council the United States, Britain, Russia, France and China plus Germany.
The two sides clinched a landmark interim deal in Geneva on November 24, 2013.
Under the deal, dubbed the Geneva Joint Plan of Action, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions will be imposed on Iran within the same timeframe. The agreement took effect on January 20.
On July 18, Iran and the Sextet of world powers agreed on the extension of talks on Tehrans nuclear energy program until November 24.
