Iran supports Iraq stability, security, progress: Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has congratulated Kurdish politician Fuad Masum on his election as Iraq’s new president, reaffirming Tehran’s support for stability and security in its western neighbor.

In a message to Masum on Thursday night, Rouhani praised the Iraqi people and officials for paying due regard to the development of the political process, reinforcement of democracy and the fight against terrorism at the current critical juncture, reaffirming Iran’s backing for stability in the Arab country.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s strategic approach toward Iraq is to contribute to stability, security, development and welfare of the honorable Iraqi people,” he said.

The Iranian government and nation will continue to support a united and stable Iraq where all ethnic and religious groups actively participate in running the country’s affairs.

Rouhani also called for the further development of cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad on regional and bilateral issues.

On Thursday, the Iraqi parliament named Masum as federal president after the veteran Kurdish politician won an overwhelming majority of votes.

Masum’s election as the new president of Iraq is seen as a long-awaited step in the formation of a new government, which has been grappling with a fresh wave of Takfiri violence.

Iraq’s parliament is to meet on August 5 to discuss picking a new prime minister. The Iraqi lawmakers elected Salim al-Jabouri, a well-known moderate Sunni politician, as the country’s new parliament speaker on July 15.

This comes as the Iraqi forces are pressing ahead with their fight against ISIL Takfiri militants, who have taken control of large swathes of the country and threatened to take the battle to the capital, Baghdad.
