Tehran, July 25, IRNA Secretary of Iran?s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani, in a message released on Friday, congratulated veteran Kurdish politician Fuad Masum on his election as Iraqs new president following a parliamentary vote.The official hailed Masums election as the new president of Iraq and said the Islamic Republic would continue its constructive role in supporting the Kurds, Shia and Sunni Muslims in Iraq.
Shamkhani further reaffirmed Irans support for Iraqs territorial integrity and national unity, stressing that the Islamic Republic throws its weight behind the Arab nations battle against Takfiri terrorists.
On Thursday, the Iraqi parliament named Masum as federal president after the senior Kurdish politician managed to secure 211 of the 228 valid ballots cast in a secret voting.
Iraqs parliament is to meet August 5 to discuss picking a new prime minister. The Iraqi lawmakers elected Salim al-Jabouri, a well-known moderate Sunni politician, as the countrys new parliament speaker last week.
