Shamkhani congratulates Masum on election as Iraq president

Tehran, July 25, IRNA – Secretary of Iranˈs Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani, in a message released on Friday, congratulated veteran Kurdish politician Fuad Masum on his election as Iraq’s new president following a parliamentary vote.
The official hailed Masum’s election as the new president of Iraq and said the Islamic Republic would continue its constructive role in supporting the Kurds, Shia and Sunni Muslims in Iraq.

Shamkhani further reaffirmed Iran’s support for Iraq’s territorial integrity and national unity, stressing that the Islamic Republic throws its weight behind the Arab nation’s battle against Takfiri terrorists.

On Thursday, the Iraqi parliament named Masum as federal president after the senior Kurdish politician managed to secure 211 of the 228 valid ballots cast in a secret voting.

Iraq’s parliament is to meet August 5 to discuss picking a new prime minister. The Iraqi lawmakers elected Salim al-Jabouri, a well-known moderate Sunni politician, as the country’s new parliament speaker last week.
