Iran deputy FM heads to UAE, Kuwait, Oman

Iran's deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs has embarked on a three-nation tour of the Persian Gulf for talks on regional developments.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian left Tehran Sunday night on a whistle-stop trip to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Oman.

During his visit, the top Iranian diplomat will sit down with the officials of the three countries to discuss the latest developments in the region, particularly the situation in Iraq and Syria.

Iraq is currently witnessing a wave of violence, which escalated after Takfiri militants from the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) took control of large swathes of the country, including key cities, last month.

The ISIL militancy is not limited to Iraq as the al-Qaeda-inspired group is also operating in neighboring Syria at the same time.

Iran says it attaches importance to strengthening ties with Mideast countries in order to maintain security in the region.

Earlier on June 30, Amir-Abdollahian traveled to Moscow to exchange views with Russian officials on extremism as well as regional developments, including the situation in Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Bahrain.

In an interview with Iran's al-Alam Arabic-language news channel on Sunday, Amir-Abdollahian said, Tehran and Moscow have close and in many cases common and coordinated stances on regional developments.

He added that Iran and Russia had agreed to jointly help Iraq combat terrorism.
