A high-ranking Iranian official says the Islamic Republic will dispatch munitions and military hardware to Iraq to help it battle the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants.Should Iraq submit a request, we (Iran) would send military equipment to Iraq within the framework of the international law as well as conventional and transparent accords, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in an exclusive interview with Irans Arabic-language news network Al-Alam on Thursday.
He added thatBaghdadhas not put in such a request yet, underlining that Iraq enjoys the capability to confront ISIL militants.
Amir-Abdollahian also emphasized that Iran will stand by Iraq in its campaign against terrorism.
Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the 41st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the Saudi city of Jeddah on June 18, Iraqs Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the Iraqi government may request Irans assistance to fight ISIL terrorists.
Zebari said that everything is possible in view of Irans assistance in the Iraqi battle against terrorists.
On June 10, the ISIL militants took control of Mosul, the capital of Iraqs Nineveh Province. They later took control of the city of Tikrit, about 140 kilometers (87 miles) northwest of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people have been forced out of their homes ever since.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has vowed that the countrys security forces would confront the foreign-sponsored terrorists, describing the seizure of Mosul as a conspiracy.
