Successful N. talks could make room for other issues: Iranian official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Head of Irans Presidential Office Mohammad Nahavandian said if the talks on Tehrans peaceful nuclear program yield results, the country could start considering other discussions, possibly joint efforts by Iran and the US to settle the terrorist crisis in Iraq.

Speaking to reporters in the Norwegian capital of Oslo on Wednesday, Nahavandian referred to the nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers as a "test for confidence building", when asked about possible cooperation with the US in Iraq.

"If that comes to a final resolution, then there might be opportunities for other issues to be discussed, AFP cited President Hassan Rouhani's chief of staff as saying.

With the security situation deteriorating in Iraq following recent terrorist attacks by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), US Defense Minister Chuck Hagel spoke on Wednesday of possible cooperation with Iran to ease the tensions in the Arab country.

"We had worked with the Iranians on that western border of Afghanistan," Hagel told a congressional panel.

"So there's some history here of sharing common interests," he added, citing "significant differences" with Iran.

In Iran, however, a high-ranking military officer dismissed the notion that the country might cooperate with the US forces to help Iraq deal with the security challenges.

(Military) cooperation between Iran and the US will never happen and it does not make sense at all, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi said on Wednesday.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Major General Firouzabadi played down expectations that Iran might consider its forces on the ground in Iraq to battle against the terrorists.

By no means will military forces be deployed from Iran to Iraq, and, principally, there is no need for that, he stressed.
