VP hails stop of low quality fuel production

Tehran, June 10, IRNA - Vice President and Head of Department of Environment Masoumeh Ebtekar on Tuesday hailed cessation of low quality fuel production.
Talking to IRNA, she noted that Ministry of Petroleum (MoU) is doing its best to prepare the ground for distribution of Euro-4 premium gasoline in all major cities by December 21, 2014.
She said stop of production and distribution of low quality fuel was a big national achievement, adding that her organization supported the decision.

She noted that there are different reasons such as industrial activities and public transport for air pollution in Tehran but substandard cars and low quality fuel should be mostly blamed.

Ms Ebtekar said clean air entails a development in auto sector, international standards, and applied research.

MoU has already started distribution of Euro-4 premium gasoline in a number of major cities including the capital Tehran, Karaj, Ahwaz and Arak.

Euro-4 is a globally-accepted European emission standard for the production of vehicle fuel with significantly low amounts of sulfur.

Environmental experts believe that a large part of air pollution in Iran is due to pollutant emissions from vehicles and motorcycles using low quality petrol from petrochemical components.

Degradation of environment in Tehran has created critical situation sending several thousand to hospitals annually.
