Singaporean speaker hopes for enhanced trade cooperation with Iran
TEHRAN (FNA)- Singaporean Parliament Speaker Halimah Yacob in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed the hope that trade and economic cooperation between the two countries would further increase.

"We hope that the negotiations between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, Britain and France plus Germany) will end in success and in the interest of the Iranian people and government, and that we will witness reinvigoration and development of cooperation between Singapore and Tehran, specially in economic and trade fields, after the removal of certain obstacles," Yacob said in Tehran on Sunday.

She also underlined the necessity for the further expansion of good and friendly relations between Iran and Singapore, specially in cultural, scientific and academic fields, and said, "The two countries' parliaments can play a highly effective role in supporting the consolidation and facilitation of the relations, specially in economic, trade, scientific and cultural fields."

Zarif, for his part, underscored that Iran and Singapore can have good cooperation in the economic sector given their good potentials and capabilities.

He also underlined the important role of the parliaments in broadening ties between the two countries, and called for increased reciprocal visits by Iranian and Singaporean officials to this end.

Yacob arrived in Tehran on Saturday for a five-day visit at the invitation of Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.

During her stay in Tehran, the top Singaporean parliamentarian plans to confer with senior Iranian officials on the expansion of parliamentary cooperation between the two friendly nations.

A group of parliamentarians and political officials are accompanying Yacob.

Yacob is the first Muslim female who has been elected as Singapore's parliament speaker.
