Vote count underway in Syria's presidential election

Vote count underway in Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- The vote count is underway in Syria after polling stations closed at midnight, in a presidential race needed to establish legitimacy in the violence-torn country.

The country's Higher Judicial Committee for Elections extended the voting process by five extra hours to allow Syrians enough time to make their choice. Head of the committee Hisham al-Shaar said that no violations have been reported, the state news agency reported.

No exit polls have so far been released, and the voter turnout is still unknown, but authorities did note massive participation.

Bashar Assad running to win his third seven-year term in office, is up against Hassan Abdullah Nouri, from the National Initiative for Administration and Change in Syria, and Maher Abd Al-Hafiz Hajjar, formerly from the People's Will Party.
