Iran says it backs Egypts move towards the establishment of democracy a day after former military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi was declared president.
The Islamic Republic of Iran always regards, in principle, the holding of elections as peoples legitimate right to determine [their] future and a step towards the reinforcement of democracy, said Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham on Tuesday.

Undoubtedly, the continuation of this process through the massive participation of all parties and political currents, particularly the true representatives of all walks of life in Egypt, will not only help complete the establishment of national sovereignty, solidarity and unity within the civil society in Egypt, but it will also have an impact on the reinforcement of the countrys stability and security and promotion of its regional status, she added.

On Tuesday evening, Egypts election commission officially announced Sisi as the winner of the countrys presidential election.

The election commission said that Sisi, who last July overthrew Egypt's first democratically elected president Mohammed Morsi, won the 96.1 percent of last weeks vote. The turnout was recorded at 47 percent of the country's 53 million eligible voters. Some Egyptian movements that had boycotted the voting put the turnout at 11 percent.

The former military chief won the election over his only rival Hamdeen Sabahi who has criticized the vote as unfair.

Egypt's presidential election was to be held over two days but was extended by another day following a low voter turnout.

Sisis presidency places Egypt back in the hands of a top military official just three years after a popular uprising toppled former President Hosni Mubarak, an air force officer who ruled the North African country for nearly three decades.
