TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Saturday extended Tehran's condolences to the Lao government and nation on a recent deadly plane crash that killed the East Asian countrys defense minister.

A military plane carrying senior Lao government officials crashed in a wooded area on May 17 as it approached an airport in the country's northeast, killing at least five people, including Defense Minister Douangchay Phichit and his wife and other high-ranking members of the country's ruling party.

In a message on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham condoled with the Lao government, nation and bereaved family members of the victims of the tragic incident.

The Russian-made plane, with 20 people on board, had left from the capital city of Vientiane, headed for an official ceremony in the northeastern province of Xiangkhoung, about 470 kilometers away.

It crashed in a forested area of Xiangkhoung province, near one of Laos' major archaeological sites, the Plain of Jars.
