Iran welcomes closer relations with EU: Official

A high-ranking Iranian official says the Islamic Republic welcomes further expansion of relations with all the member states of the European Union (EU).
Irans Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi stated on Saturday that Iran regards the EU as a suitable trade partner.

He added that Tehran is prepared to expand its ties with all European countries, including EU member states, on the basis of common interests, mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Takht-e-Ravanchi further stated that the Islamic Republic considers the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States and the EU against it over the countrys nuclear energy program as cruel and unjust, and has expressed its opposition to such bids.

Also on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said there is a great opportunity for cooperation between the Islamic Republic and the European Union in different economic sectors.

There are vast areas for cooperation and consultation between Iran and the EU at the regional level, Zarif noted.

On March 10, EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, expressed the 28-member blocs willingness to enhance economic and cultural relations with Iran.
