Tehran hosts Int値 cochlear implant congress
Tehran, May 10, IRNA - The 3rd Iranian Congress on Cochlear Implant and Related Sciences opened in Tehran on May 10 with the participation of 35 guests from countries, including US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Austria and Australia.
The congress is organized by the Iranian Society of Otolaryngology and will run till May 12.
Professor Mohammad Ajal-Louian, scientific secretary of the congress, said that since 1990, when the first cochlear implant took place in Iran, over 6,000 such surgeries have been performed in the country.

He added that experts from all across the world will give lectures, seminars, hold workshops and panel discussions, and will present the latest research achievements on cochlear implant and implantable hearing devices.

展orkshops on new surgical techniques and devices for cochlear implant will also be held on the sidelines of the congress, he said.

A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing.

Cochlear implants may help provide hearing in patients who are deaf because of damage to sensory hair cells in their cochleas. In such patients, the implants often can enable sufficient hearing for better understanding of speech.

The sound quality is different from natural hearing, with less sound information being received and processed by the brain. However, many patients are able to hear and understand speech and environmental sounds.
