Iran develops nanocomposite for bone substitution

Tehran, May 3, IRNA – Iranian researchers have developed sol-gel-derived multi-wall carbon nanotube/hydroxyapatite nanocomposite powders for bone substitution.
Carbon nanotubes have shown great potential for biological applications, including tissue engineering and mimicking the structure and properties of human bones.

According to Tabassom Houshmand, faculty member of Tehran Medical University and the project researcher, the introduction of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the hydroxyapatite matrix and coating of nanocomposite on titanium alloy plate was conducted to improve the performance of HA-coated implant via the sol-gel method.
Results indicate that addition of low concentrations of MWCNTs had improved the mechanical properties of nanocomposite coatings.
