Iran introduces grass resistant to water shortage
TEHRAN, April 21 (MNA) Researchers in Isfahan Industrial University has developed a type of grass which is resistant to shortage of water.
Mohammad Sheikhmohammadi, the major researcher and a graduate of Agricultural Sciences told Mehr News that their research focused on the examination of Iranian native grass resistance to water shortage, and that our research produced a type of grass resistant to water shortage.

He held that drought was the most damaging stressful situation for grass growth in large spectrum of global habitats. Many of species of grass with habitats in cold region could not adapt to longdroughtespecially in hot seasons, thuscontributing to the grass lower quality, is a source of concern for green space managers, he added.

Sheikhmohammadi cited consumption of a large amount of water for irrigation of the grass as the main natural covering of the terrain in cities as a drawback of the grass. Since many regions of Iran face water shortages, it is important that plans be prepared to minimize water consumption in cities, he said, the insufficient precipitation and irregularly scattered model of precipitation place Iran among the arid and semi-arid countries in the world with annual average precipitation of 244mm, which is a third of global average.

He also evaluated the selection of native species with resistance against water shortage as the most important solution to improve the resistance. Saving water, reducing chemicals as fertilizers and pesticides to the soil, and underground water are benefits of growing native grass which is resistant to water paucity, he said.
