Tehran, March 12, IRNA – Speaker of the Iranian parliament (Majlis) Ali Larijani on Wednesday strongly criticized the “sneaky” meeting of the EU officials in Tehran.
Referring to an unofficial meeting of the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton here, Larijani said the move was “far from the degnity” of the EU delegation.
Rejecting comments made by an MP who had said the move was an example of “capitulation,” he said, “Although the sneaky meeting of the EU officials in Tehran was far from their dignity, that should not be compared to capitualtion.”
“No world country is as free and independent as Iran,” Larijani stressed.
The EU delegation arrived here on March 8, headed by Ashton who had separate meetings with President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Larijani and a number of other senior officials of the country.
During the meetings, the two sides discussed major issues such as Iran-EU relations and West’s dispute over Tehranˈs peaceful nuclear program.
The EU delegatioin also made a secret meeting with certain Iranian nationals at the Austrian Embassy in tehran. The move was strongly criticized by Iranian authorities.
