TEHRAN, March 9 (MNA) – EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has arrived in Tehran Saturday and met with Iran’s FM Mohammad Javad Zarif Sunday morning.
This is the 1st time that Ashton heading a European political and economical delegation visits Iran. Iran’s Deputy FM for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araghchi received her at Mehrabad International Airport Saturday afternoon.
After their meeting, Catherine Ashton and Mohammad Javad Zarif will attend a joint press conference.
Iran’s FM Mohammad Javad Zarif had invited her at their first meeting on the side lines of UN General Assembly in New York last January. The invitation was an open one with no specific time mentioned.
With next round of Iran’s nuclear talks between Iran and Powers to be resumed on March 16 to 18 in Vienna, EU chief’s visit to Iran will be of great importance and influence to the development of negotiations.
A delegation of EU members, Ashton’s aid, Helga Schmid and EU spokesman Micheal Mann, are with her in her Iran visit.
Iran’s foreign ministry said that EU foreign policy chief will meet with Iran’s president Dr Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s parliament speaker Ali Larijani and Leader’s senior adviser Aliakbar Velayati on Sunday.
On Monday Ashton will visit Isfahan to see Iran’s tourist beauties there.
