Iranian President Rouhani confirms visit to Oman in near future

Muscat:Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has confirmed that he plans to pay a visit to the Sultanate of Oman in the near future, the first country in the Gulf he would be visiting since assuming office.
"Will travel to #Oman soon... Iran-Oman joint efforts could help united World Agst Violence & Extremism #WAVE," Hassan Rowhani wrote on his Twitter account on Thursday.

He was referring to the World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) resolution, which he had proposed during his speech at the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly in NewYork last September. It was overwhelmingly approved by the General Assembly in December.

The WAVE resolution urges all countries to unite against "violent extremism" in all its forms,
including sectarian violence.

First in Gulf
Times of Oman on Wednesday quoted Iranian Ambassador Ali Akbar Sibeveih as saying that Oman would be the first country in the Gulf that Rowhani would be visiting given exemplary relations between the two countries. "He will arrive in Oman in the very near future," the ambassador said at the time.

New chapter
"This trip will open a new chapter in relations between the two friendly countries and will contribute to the promotion of peace, stability, and security in the region," the Iranian Ambassador to Oman told Times of Oman after Rowhani's confirmation.

His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said was the first head of state to visit Tehran for bilateral talks from August 25 to August 27, 2013 after Rowhani was inaugurated on August 3.

He was also the first foreign ruler to visit Iran after the re-election of Rowhani's predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in 2009. That trip marked His Majesty the Sultan's first visit to Iran in 30 years.
