UN tourism chief hails Iranˈs tourism potential

Berlin, Mar 6, IRNA –The Secretary-General of the UNˈs World Tourism Organisation Taleb Rifai highlighted Iranˈs great tourism potential.

Addressing a press briefing hosted by the Berlin-based Foreign Press Association (VAP) on the sidelines of Berlinˈs 48th ITB tourism fair, Rifai stressed Iran is a ˈvery active memberˈ within the World Tourism Organization.

Iran has shown a desire to open up within the last few years and our organization is ready to further deepen our cooperation with Iran, he said.

Rifai pointed also out it had become easier to visit Iran over the past six months.

He highlighted the fact that Iran attaches great importance to promoting its tourism industry as one of the Iranian vice-presidents is also in charge of tourism affairs.

Rifai noted tourism could only blossom when there is a clear ˈpolitical will.ˈ

The UN tourist official hailed Iran for using tourism as a soft diplomacy tool, saying there was a direct link between promoting ˈpeace, stability and soft diplomacy.ˈ

People to people contacts are ˈthe biggest destroyers of barriers and stereotypes,ˈ said Rifai who has been Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organisation since 2010.
