Red Cross lauds Irans active cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representative office in Tehran Olivier Martin commended Tehran for its constructive cooperation with the independent organization.
Martin, in a Sunday meeting with Iranian Parliament's First Vice-Speaker Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabifard in Tehran, described Iran as an important country, and noted, There has always been constructive cooperation between the ICRC and the concerned bodies in Iran.

He also pointed to the important role of the legislative bodies in Iran in a bid to facilitate humanitarian moves, and stated, The Iranian parliament can be a valuable backup for reinvigoration of mutual cooperation in the humanitarian field.

The Iranian parliamentarian, for his part, urged the ICRC to put efforts into providing peace and calm all over the world.

The main responsibility of the ICRC is to bring about peace and tranquility in different parts of the world, Aboutorabifard explained.

In a relevant development in November, 2013, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held a meeting with the ICRC president in the Swiss city of Geneva.

The meeting focused on the cooperation between Iran and the ICRC in diverse fields, in particular the humanitarian assistance for the Syrian nation, distressed by a three-year-long war that has inflicted serious damage on the Arab country.

The ICRC, established in 1863, works worldwide to provide humanitarian help for people affected by conflict and armed violence and to promote the laws that protect victims of war.

As an independent and neutral organization, its mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, it employs some 12,000 people in 80 countries. The ICRC is financed mainly by voluntary donations from governments and from national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, according to its website.
