The Turkish government has raised import duties on Iranian polymers from 3% to 6.5% after a near two-month delay, two Turkey-based trade sources said Tuesday. The new import duties came into effect Monday, the sources said.
Turkey imports large quantities of polypropylene and polyethylene from Iran. It also imports a more limited quantity of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
Talks of duty hikes in Turkey follow a revision of the EU customs regime -- the Generalized Scheme of Preferences -- for which Iran no longer qualifies.
Previously, the Turkish government raised import duties on all polymers from countries that no longer qualified for the EU trade regime, such as Saudi Arabia, to 6.5% from 3% on January 1.
However, the Turkish government delayed the increase on Iran, also originally scheduled for January 1, which gave Iranian polymer producers an advantage in the market, according to sources.
