Iranian Oil Ministry warns Pakistan over inaction over IP gas pipeline project

Tehran, Feb 25, IRNA Deputy Oil Minister for International Affairs Ali Majedi on Wednesday criticized Pakistan for its failure to abide by its commitments with regards to IP gas pipeline project and said linking the failure to US-led anti-Iran sanctions is not justifiable.

Majedi said as far as the contract for gas sale to Pakistan is concerned, the Iranian party has thus far fulfilled more than 75 percent of its commitments by laying 924 kms out of 1,227 kms of pipelines on its soil.

?Unfortunately, the Pakistani party has not taken any concrete and serious measure in this connection and it seems that the country will face enormous problems in fulfilling its commitments.?

He said when contract was signed Pakistan was under pressure and there were efforts to dissuade the country from signing the document. Since the beginning, the Pakistani party has been aware of anti-Iran sanctions, he added.

Majedi said abiding by a contract has nothing to do with sanctions imposed by a third country on the other party to the contract. ?The sanctions are political in nature and at any rate, political considerations can not justify non-commitment to the contract.?

Pakistani media quoted Pakistani Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as saying on Tuesday that the work on the pipeline was not possible because it falls under the sanctions imposed by the US and EU.
