Nobel laureate due in Iran for Int
TEHRAN (Tasnim) The 12th International Congress of Immunology and Allergy of Iran is scheduled to be held in Tehran this spring with Prof. Rolf Martin Zinkernagel, the Nobel prize winner, in attendance.


Speaking on Sunday, Jamshid Hajati, the scientific secretary of the congress, said that the international event will be held from April 30 to May 2 in the Conference Hall of Tehran's Milad Tower.

He added that over 1500 scientific articles from different world countries will be introduced in the event, adding that the articles will be on the latest findings on immunology and allergy and new treatment and diagnosis methods on cancer and allergy.

Meantime, reports said that Prof. Rolf M. Zinkernagel, the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, will give a lecture in the scientific gathering.

Rolf Martin Zinkernagel (born January 6, 1944 in Riehen, Basel-Stadt, Switzerland) is Professor of Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996 for the discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells.

He received his MD degree from the University of Basel in 1970 and his PhD degree from the Australian National University in 1975. In addition to the Nobel Prize, he also won The Albert Lasker Medical Research Award in 1995 and the Cancer Research Institute William B. Coley Award in 1987.

He is a member of the Cancer Research Institute Scientific Advisory Council, The National Academy of Sciences, and The Academy of Cancer Immunology. Zinkernagel was elected as a Corresponding Fellow to the Australian Academy of Science also in 1996.
