Iran backs Caracas call for peace, calm: Afkham

Irans Foreign Ministry says the Islamic Republic supports the Venezuelan governments call for peace, calm and stabilityamid the ongoingviolence in the South American country.
Irans Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Sunday that Tehran condemns any violent act, killing of innocent people, destruction of public property and destabilizing measures.
The Islamic Republic of Iran places emphasis on establishing security and peace and preparing the ground for the wellbeing and prosperity of the Venezuelan people, Afkham said.
On Wednesday, student protesters and several opposition politicians converged in downtown Caracas to denounce President Nicolas Maduros handling of Venezuela's ailing economy.

Clashes between the Venezuelan government opponents and security forces left at least three people dead and nearly two dozen others injured. Moreover, some 100 people were arrested.

The protests were the biggest since Maduro was elected nearly a year ago following the death of his mentor, Hugo Chavez.

Supporters and opponents of Maduro on Saturday took to the streets of the capital, Caracas, in rival marches.
Addressing thousands of his supporters, Maduro said, "I call all the people to the streets in order to defend peace."
The Venezuelan president emphasized that his government would not give in to "fascists."

Maduro, who promised to tighten security across the country after the recent clashes, has frequently accused the United States of being behind the unrest.
