Caspian Sea zone for cooperation, peace: Rouhani

Caspian Sea zone for cooperation, peace: Rouhani
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the Caspian Sea is a zone of cooperation, peace, security and calm for all littoral countries.
The Caspian Sea littoral states need to have more cooperation on environment protection, the ecosystem, the sea, shipping, establishment of security and the formulation of a legal regime, Rouhani said in a meeting with Turkmenistan Foreign Minister Rasit Meredow in Tehran on Saturday.

He also stressed the need for Tehran-Ashgabat cooperation on the fight against terrorism and extremism, calling for collective efforts by all regional countries to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.

Rouhani also pointed to the friendly and historical relations between Iran and Turkmenistan, noting that Iranian companies enjoy great potential and expertise in the fields of the construction of power plants, dams and housing units, and can help with further enhancement of bilateral economic and trade ties between the two countries by participating in projects in Turkmenistan.

Meredow, for his part, extended Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedows invitation to Rouhani to pay an official visit to Turkmenistan.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a friendly and close neighbor of Turkmenistan, and Ashgabat is trying to further deepen its vast ties with Tehran, he pointed out.

Iran and Turkmenistan have had official diplomatic relations since Turkmenistans independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Iran was the first nation to recognize Turkmenistan as an independent country.

Since then, the two countries have enjoyed good relations and have cooperated in the economic, infrastructure and energy sectors.
