Iran supreme leader stresses domestic potential in boosting economy

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged Saturday to rely on domestic potential as the only way to solve the nation's economic problems, semi-official ISNA news agency reported.
"Fortunately, the officials of the country have realized that looking out (of the borders) for sanction removal is not the way to tackle the problems," Ayatollah Khamenei was quoted as saying by ISNA.

He said Iran should not anticipate its enemy to help settle its problems while addressing military commanders at a celebration ceremony to mark the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

"The enemies are making remarks which should be a lesson for our nation," he said, adding that Iran "should be cognizant about the talks and impolite comments by the Americans."

The comments by the Iranian Supreme Leader followed recent statements made by Wendy Sherman, the U.S. Undersecretary of State and nuclear negotiator, that Iran did not need to have an underground fortified enrichment facility like Fordow or to possess its heavy-water reactor at Arak.

When sworn last August, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani pledged to interact with the world and be transparent on Tehran's nuclear activities so that Iran could get out of the difficult economic situation.

The new government's top priority has been urging the West to relieve the sanctions slapped on Iran.

In November, Iran and the P5+1 group, namely the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany, signed an interim nuclear deal which came into effect on Jan. 20.

Under the agreement, Iran suspended its 20-percent uranium enrichment and started to dilute and oxidize its 196 kg stockpile of 20-percent enriched uranium in exchange for a partial relief of sanctions on its energy and financial sectors.

The United States has called for further concessions by Iran on its sensitive nuclear program in return for a considerable easing of sanctions.
