Documentary portrays daily lives of victims of Dorudzan school fire
TEHRAN An Iranian filmmaker has produced a documentary about the daily lives of the school children, who were severely burned in a school fire in the village of Dorudzan in Fars Province in 2006.
Entitled The Silken Faces, the documentary has been directed by Akbar Nazemi and was screened in Tehran on Saturday evening at the 32nd Fajr International Film Festival, which is currently underway in the capital.

In 2006, a heater caught fire in an elementary school in Dorudzan village in Fars province and eight children including six girls and two boys were severely burned, Nazemi told the Persian service of MNA on Sunday.

When the heater is overturned, children use their jackets to help fight the blaze, but their jackets and the desks all begin to burn, leaving no alternative for children to escape, he added.

The school principal was also informed, but it seems that he was on the phone and did not take the issue seriously, he added.

However, the children were taken to a hospital in Shiraz, but they are still grappling with a series of problems after all these years, he said.

Narges Heidari is one of the girls who has suffered the most and has had 16 operations, he said, adding, I have tried to portray their daily lives and how they get along with their problems in my documentary.

I chose the name silk portraits since their faces are not as soft as silk any longer, and reflect the bitter brown color of burns, he added.

Nazemi added that the families of the children also talk about their expectation from the public sectors in this documentary.

I tried not to make any judgment in advance. I also met the principal who gladly agreed to be interviewed and defended himself. But no official from the Education Ministry agreed to an interview, he concluded.
