Gary Sick: Iran-West talks should be limited to nuclear issue
ILNA: Former member of the US National Security Council Gary Sick said the talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 should only be restricted to the nuclear issue since discussing other subjects would have no results but failure.

Sick, a professor of the International Affairs and a senior research scholar at the Columbia School of International & Public Affairs, made the remarks in an exclusive interview with IRNA.

Commenting on some speculations about raising irrelevant issues in the next round of nuclear talks with Iran, the US analyst said the two sides have previously agreed that the talks should only be limited to Irans nuclear issue.

Other topics would only be added to the talks after fulfilling the objectives of the first agreement, stressed the analyst, noting that discussing new subjects would only lead to failure of the nuclear talks.

The next round of talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 is to be held in Vienna, Austria, on February 18.

Referring to a letter written a few days ago by over 70 Democrat members of the US House of Representatives to President Barack Obama supporting his opposition to new anti-Iran sanctions, Sick said the letter was considered as a vote of confidence to the policies of Obamas administration.

The academic who is also an analyst of Middle East affairs, with special expertise on Iran and served on the staff of the US National Security Council under Presidents Ford, Carter, and Reagan, stressed the letter was highly significant amid the ongoing efforts to damage the nuclear deal with Iran.

He added the US representatives support for President Obama would definitely lead to Washingtons full commitment to the November 24 nuclear deal with Iran.

Experts of Iran and the Group 5+1 (US, Russia, Britain, France and China plus Germany) organized a mechanism or a joint plan of action for implementation of bilateral agreement reached between the two sides in Geneva on November 24, 2013.

Referring to the support of the former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton for President Obamas stance on anti-Iran sanction, Sick said her move proved that the US president has succeeded to stabilize his stands on the issue.

Clinton urged her former Senate colleagues a couple of days ago not to pass new sanctions on Iran.
