Iran, Russia discussing nuclear plants construction: Salehi

The Iranian nuclear chief says the Islamic Republic is in talks with Russia for the construction of new nuclear power plants (NPPs) to produce 4,000 megawatts of electricity.
In an exclusive interview with Press TV on Monday, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi pointed to a 1992 deal between Tehran and Moscow on the construction of nuclear plants, saying the agreement requires Russia to construct another 4,000 megawatts of nuclear power plants in Iran.

Tehran and Moscow are holding serious talks on the implementation of the 1992 agreement, he added.

The Iranian official further stated that Tehran had also received proposals from other countries, besides Russia, for the construction of nuclear power plants inside Iran. However, he did not name those states.

Salehi also expressed Irans readiness to assist its neighboring countries in building their own nuclear power plants, saying, If they ask us for assistance, we can be good advisors in many aspects.

Iran and Russia reached an agreement in 1995 to complete the power plant, but the completion of the project was delayed several times due to a number of technical and financial problems until 2011.

In September 2013, Iran officially took over from Russia the first unit of its first 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant in Bushehr for two years. The initial construction of the Bushehr facility began in 1975 by German companies, but the work was halted following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

On January 16, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said he had exchanged views with senior Russian officials over the construction of new nuclear power plants in Iran during his visit to Moscow.
