Agencies for deporting Iran ex-envoy on 'suspicious' activities

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani security establishment has recommended immediate deportation of an ex-Iranian ambassador to Pakistan, Abu Sharif Zamani after he was found involved in suspected activities in Pakistan, The Frontier Post reliably learnt on Sunday.
According to the intelligence reports, a copy of which is also available with The Frontier Post, Zamani served as Iranian ambassador to Pakistan during 1982-85 and got settled in Islamabad due to his differences with the then Iranian government. He managed to get Pakistani CNIC (16202-4880609-7) in the name of Abbas Khan s/o Ali Zaman and also got married to a Pakistani lady school teacher Ms Janat Zeba and worked as a storekeeper in a hospital in Barakahu, Islamabad. He also started teaching in a school owned by a JUI-F leader, said the reports.

It further said that Zamani subsequently developed good relations with Shia and Deobandi Ulema (JUI-F) and used to hold frequent meetings with Iranian embassy in Pakistan officials and attend their embassy functions. On June 23, 2011, Zamani went to Iran along with 11 member delegation led by JUI-F leaders and Iranian embassy Islamabad issued him travel documents. In Iran, he held meetings with Rehber Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei who reportedly offered him two senior positions in Iranian government. Zamani returned to Pakistan but on Iranian passport (R 19232893) after getting one month visa valid up to January 19, 2012. However, his visa was extended for six months up to July 19, 2012.

The reports further said on February 7, 2012, Iranian Cover Officer Mr. Hussain Halvaei took Zamani from his residence to Iranian embassy for meeting. On February 8, 2012, Zamani departed for Iran from Karachi airport along with 3 JUI-F leaders to attend a conference in Tehran where 100 religious scholars across the world discussed the Arab awakening and interfaith harmony amongst Muslim Ummah. However, Zamani stayed back in Iran and returned to Pakistan on May 10, 2012 at his residence in Barakahu Islamabad just to restart his activities in Islamabad area.

According to the reports, Zamani on September 11, 2013 held a meeting with Iranian visiting delegation at Iranian Culture Centre Islamabad in the presence of some Iranian diplomats and Cover Officer. Later, Zamani took along the delegation members and diplomats for visit to various Madaris in Barakahu Islamabad. The authorities have expressed concerned over the suspected activities of Zamani who has currently been residing in G-11 Sector of the capital. Investigating agencies repeatedly asked the ministry of interior to deport him immediately. However, the ministry is yet to take any action in this regard, the sources said.
