Relief workers sent to quake-hit Goharan

Bandar Abbas, Feb 2, IRNA After a magnitude-5.5 earthquake hit Goharan, Bashagard in Hormuzgan province, late on Sunday, relief workers were dispatched to the quake-stricken area, said managing director of Hormuzgan province Red Crescent Society.
Talking to IRNA, Ali Ema added that the workers deployed in Bashagard area are currently examining the situation in the region and nearby villages.

The results will soon be released, he said.

Preliminary observations reveal that walls of a number of residential units in Goharan have sustained cracks.

Ema further noted that an aftershock measuring four on Richter scale happened in Goharan.

A relatively strong earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the open-ended Richter scale, jolted suburbs of Goharan on border between Kerman and Hormuzgan provinces Sunday afternoon.

According to a report released by the Seismography Center of Tehran Universitys Geophysics Institute, the quake occurred at 17:56 hours local time (14:26 hours GMT) with its epicenter being registered at 9.57 degrees latitude and 26.73 degrees longitude in the suburbs of Goharan of Bashagard city, east of Hormuzgan province.
