Civil Society and Government Covenant Conference under fire from environmentalists
TEHRAN, Feb. 1 (MNA) A member of Campaign to Save Irans Large Carnivores has criticized the Conference on Civil Society and Government Covenant for failure to address the illegal haunting and fishing.
Jamshid Parchizadeh, who was speaking to Mehr News correspondent in the sidelines of Conference on Civil Society and Government Covenant in Tehran on Wednesday, told that most of the participants demanded that the government should fight illegal haunting and fishing of endangered land and water species.

The Conference on Civil Society and Government Covenant in cyber space was held as Conference on Civil Society and Government Covenant to Save Environment, Nature, and Animal Species, which was to focus on fighting illegal haunting and fishing, he added, our campaign welcomed initially the conference and its intended objectives, however, we noticed that the conference was dubbed Conference on Civil Society and Government Officials Covenant for a Blue Sky.

Member of Campaign to Save Irans Large Carnivores also asserted that although we appreciated positively the attendance by the Head of Department of Environment to listen to the voice of friends of animals; we appreciated also attendance by deputy-Ministers of Energy, Oil, and economists, athletes, and art celebrities to support campaign to save the environment; we appreciated that a forum was held to discuss the Iranian panther sub-species in an official conference; we appreciated the open letter signed by members of Campaign to Save Irans Larger Carnivores delivered to deputy-head of the Natural Environment and Biodiversity of Department of Environment; we appreciated the fact that Irans state TV broadcasted the voices of true friends of wildlife, and that opportunist circles were exposed.

However, the conference suffered some weaknesses which should be addressed in due time, Parchizadeh believed.

He also believed that the most important downside of the conference had been the poor publicity about the conference by the conference authorities, inviting the uninformed and non-expert lecturers, failure to provide effective approaches to save near-extinct sub-species of Iranian panther, failure to address the open letter signed by the Campaign on the necessity to save endangered wildlife, failure to listen to the critics of the conference, and failure to reach specific measures to save wildlife.

The Campaign would not criticize harshly or advocate blanket defense of policies of Department of Environment, but time has come for people and the government officials to care for countrys endangered animal species, Parchizadeh said.
